Suncor Public Comment Hearings

Currently, one of Suncor’s two air quality operating permits is under review by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE). Denver has submitted comments on the permit and will continue to do so at every opportunity. The key points in Denver’s comments on this permit are that the State should require Suncor to:

  • Implement air monitoring in neighborhoods closest to the plant;
  • Report upset events in more detail so our technical experts and other organizations can understand the impacts in neighborhoods; and
  • Track and report on the $5 million in repairs and process improvements through the permit.

Specific to this current permit review process, many organizations requested a hearing with the state’s Air Quality Control Commission (AQCC). The Commission has the authority to direct the Air Pollution Control Division (APCD) to strengthen requirements in the permit. Here's how you can get involved in the public hearing process:

This current permit renewal process is not the only opportunity for the State to take more aggressive action. Denver will continue to engage with the State to advocate for action and climate justice.
