How We’re Creating Safer Streets

From planning to designing to building we are rethinking how people use our city’s streets. We are rebuilding streets to achieve Complete Streets: an approach to planning, designing, building, operating, and maintaining streets that enables safe access for all people who need to use them, including pedestrians, bicyclists, motorists and transit riders of all ages and abilities.

What is the Safe System Approach?

The Safe System approach was founded on the principles that people make mistakes and that human bodies have limited ability to tolerate crash impacts.
This approach is a fundamental shift in how we think about and make decisions about street safety in all the work we do.

Creating Safer Streets

There are several effective strategies for reducing fatalities and serious injuries on city streets and for protecting all street users including people driving, biking, rolling, walking and taking transit. These strategies are focused on traffic calming, intersections and protection of vulnerable street users.

SPEED Program

To progress Denver’s Vision Zero goals, Denver is implementing several targeted safety enhancements through 2026 to reduce vehicle speeds and increase safety across Denver communities.
