The State of Colorado is currently overseeing all distribution of all available FDA-approved vaccine doses and sets the priority for allocation and distribution. The City and County of Denver is committed to a fair and organized response to support residents receiving the COVID-19 vaccine.
Denver’s COVID-19 Vaccination Plan is a three-point strategy:
- Supporting community healthcare providers
- Filling gaps in the healthcare system with reliable community vaccinations sites
- Using teams to get the vaccine to community members who may not be able to get to a site
Until the vaccine is widely available, we should all continue to wear a mask in public, maintain at least six feet of distance from others, avoid gatherings, wash hands often, and stay home when we are sick.
Vaccination Appointments and Waitlists
There are currently three types of COVID-19 vaccine available. These are from pharmaceutical companies Pfizer, Moderna, and Johnson & Johnson. The Janssen (Johnson & Johnson) vaccine requires one dose. The Pfizer and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines require two doses. Pfizer doses should be given 21 days apart and Moderna doses should be given 28 days apart. All vaccines are reported to be almost 100% protective against hospitalization and death from COVID-19.
CDC provides detailed profiles for each available vaccine on their COVID-19 Vaccines page. None of the vaccines is recommended over the other. Residents are encouraged to get whichever vaccine is offered to them when they become eligible for vaccination. Getting vaccinated greatly reduces the risk of illness if you are exposed to the virus. For detailed information about the side effects of the vaccines, see the CDC’s report on the Pfizer vaccine, the Moderna vaccine, and the Janssen (Johnson & Johnson) vaccine.
The vaccine will be free, but some providers/pharmacies may ask for insurance so they can bill for the vaccine administration fee. Medicare, Medicaid, and private insurance will cover the cost of the COVID-19 vaccines. Uninsured Coloradans will have access to free vaccines.
The vaccine will not be mandated by any agency/organization, as it is under Emergency Use Authorization.
