Careers
Denver is home to the largest sheriff department in the state of Colorado. The DSD is comprised of two divisions with diverse operations staffed by nearly 1,000 uniformed and non-uniformed members. These operations include two separate jails, security for the District and County Courts, state inmate transportation, extradition duties, fugitive and K-9 units, a Vehicle Impound Facility, and security at Denver Health Medical Center.
Sworn Positions
Become a Deputy
The Denver Sheriff Department (DSD) sworn staff are based on rank, in this order: deputy, sergeant, captain, major, division chief, sheriff. Unless you are making a lateral move from another department, or the mayor appoints you as sheriff, you will begin your career as a deputy. Once you have some experience as a deputy, you can specialize in several areas of interest, such as court services, gang intelligence, fugitive apprehension, partnering with a K-9, and more.
Before beginning the 15-week academy training, you must pre-qualify by meeting certain requirements. For more information, review the "Deputy Hiring Process" information below or contact the recruiting office at 720-812-2330 or workfordsd@denvergov.org.
