Waste Diversion in Denver Public Schools

Waste diversion is the prevention and reduction of waste going to the landfill by recycling and composting. Waste diversion generates a host of environmental and social benefits including- conserving energy, managing disposal costs, and reducing the burden on landfills and other harmful waste disposal.

Tips to Improve Diversion in DPS

  1. Include recycling at school events and sports competitions.
  2. Help afterschool care and clubs know how and where to divert materials (compost and recycling).
  3. Incorporate diversion and compost messages, tips, and tricks in daily announcements.
  4. Include diversion methods in the school newspaper, on the school website, or send school diversion information home.
  5. Have students make educational posters and post them all around the school.
  6. Have a diversion contest by classroom or grade that rewards prizes for recycling and composting the correct materials with the least amount of contamination.
  7. Create a student "Green Team" that can help monitor recycling and compost carts. More information on Green Teams can be found on the Resources webpage.
  8. Educate students through classroom presentations or demonstrations at school assemblies.
  9. Conduct a Waste Audit by tracking, weighing, and sorting samples of waste tells how well a DPS school is successfully divertingand what areas need improvement. SWM can assist with equipment and guidance.  This is a great opportunity for student involvement.
  10. Put recycling on the agenda for staff meetings, or schedule a free diversion professional development for school staff. Contact the DPS Education and Outreach Coordinator for additional assistance.
  11. Set school diversion goals.
  12. Encourage students to create recycling, compost, and diversion songs, poems, or videos.

Waste Diversion at School Events

When hosting an event, staff will need to move some of the recycling, compost, and trash carts to the event. Always pair a recycling and compost cart next to a trash can, so diversion is made easy for visitors and to reduce contamination. Hang a poster on or above the recycling and compost carts so visitors know what materials can be diverted. SWM encourages having volunteers monitor the carts during a public event to reduce contamination. After the event, volunteers should check inside the purple and green carts and pull out anything that doesn’t belong.

Managing Waste During School Breaks

SWM and the DPS Office of Sustainability will provide normal recycling and compost collections throughout the Winter and Spring breaks. Summer break will be a once-a-week collection unless a change has been announced by SWM and/or DPS. Staff and administration will inform Summer students and visitors on the recycling and compost guidelines. Relocate recycling and compost carts to accommodate areas (gyms, auditoriums) where students will be located.
