Police Arrest Suspect in 3300 Block N. Downing St. Shooting

Denver – Thursday, June 6, 2024 – Today, the Denver Police Department announces the arrest of an adult male suspect for the shooting that occurred in the 3300 block of N. Downing St. on May 17, 2024.

At approximately 4:16 p.m., on Friday, May 17, 2024, Denver Police officers responded to the 3300 block of N. Downing St. on the report of a shooting, and shortly thereafter, located an adult male victim suffering from a non-life-threatening gunshot wound who had fled to the 3000 block of N. Downing St.

Through the course of the investigation, and with the assistance of witnesses, detectives identified the suspect as Gene Smith (DOB: 7/2/66). The findings of the investigation indicate the suspect and victim were involved in a verbal altercation prior to the shooting. On Wednesday, June 5, 2024, Smith was formally arrested and is now being held for Investigation of Attempted First-Degree Murder and First-Degree Assault. The final determination of charges will be made by the Denver District Attorney’s Office.
