Trail Detours

Overview

Denver Parks and Recreation (DPR) is continuously working to improve the city's 100+ mile trail network. Construction and maintenance impacts to trails may cause temporary closures. DPR is committed to minimizing impacts to trail users by providing the safest detour routes available for the shortest duration possible.

Please be aware that unforeseen conditions due to weather or other unexpected events may require immediate closures that are not noted on this page. Use extra caution on detour routes and be prepared to plan alternate routes if necessary. View the map below to learn more about current trail detours and closures.

Pedestrian Bridge Closures

Bear Creek Trail

Two bridges along Bear Creek Trail are closed at Bear Valley Park and Dartmouth and Webster.

Harvard Gulch

A bridge along Harvard Gulch in DeBoer Park was closed in June 2023 after it was found to have critical structural issues which could not be repaired and required a complete replacement of the bridge.

Lakewood Gulch

8th and Vrain Bridge Closure

Frequently Asked Questions:

Why is the bridge at 8th Ave. & Vrain St. over Lakewood Gulch closed?
In August 2024, the bridge was found to have critical structural issues which could not be repaired and required a complete replacement of the bridge.

Why wasn’t this designed and replaced before it was closed?
Due to budget limitations, funds are typically not immediately available to avoid bridge closures like these. With nearly 200 structures along Denver’s trails and parks, more closures may be required as bridges continue to age.

What is the timeline for replacing the bridge over Lakewood Gulch?
With no funding available in the 2024 budget, a timeline to replace the Lakewood Gulch bridge has not been established.  Design and construction of a new bridge will be pending future budget allocations.

What is the detour in the meantime?
Trail users will be detoured along W 9th Ave, Tennyson St, and Utica St.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Why is the Bear Creek Park bridge closed?
In July 2025, the bridge was found to have critical structural issues which make the bridge unsafe for use.  The bridge will remain closed until it can be repaired or replaced.

corrosion holes at critical locations in two primary load bearing members.

Why wasn’t this designed and replaced before it was closed?
Due to staffing limitations, the specialized nature of bridge repairs, and budget limitations, staff and funds are not immediately available to avoid bridge closures like these.  These repairs must be added to the existing backlog and will be addressed as staff and funding availability allows.

What is the timeline for rehabilitating the bridge?
The closure will be in place until a repair can be designed and implemented.  There is no funding identified at this time.

What is the detour in the meantime?
The bridge detour will direct pedestrian traffic to the crossing at Lamar St.

Dartmouth & Webster

As of Sept. 2025: A pedestrian bridge in Bear Creek Park near Dartmouth and Webster is closed after an inspection by the Dept. of Transportation & Infrastructure determined the need for it to be rebuilt. Trail users will be detoured along S. Webster Street, W. Amherst Avenue and S. Wadsworth Boulevard. The bridge will be rebuilt when funding is available and the closure is expected to last several years.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Why is the Bear Creek Park bridge at Dartmouth and Webster closed?

During a routine structural inspection in September 2025, the bridge was found to have critical and irreparable structural damage that make the bridge unsafe for use. The bridge will remain closed until it can be replaced.

widespread corrosion with 100% section loss in multiple areas within the bridge structure

Why wasn't this designed and replaced before it was closed?

The severity and extents of corrosion found were drastically worse than the previous inspection. Due to staffing and budget limitations, resources are not immediately available to avoid bridge closures like these. This replacement must be added to the existing backlog and will be addressed as staff and funding availability allows.

What is the time line for replacing the bridge?

The closure will be in place until a replacement can be designed and implemented. There is no funding identified at this time.

What is the detour in the meantime?

The bridge detour will direct pedestrian traffic to either Wadsworth Blvd. or Webster St. to Amherst Ave. See map linked above.
