The 2011 Washington Park Vision Plan identified a series of improvements to preserve the park’s legacy and enhance the community experience. This project focuses on:
- Picnic Areas 1 and 4: Both areas show signs of wear and no longer meet current ADA standards.
- Picnic Area 1 (north end): Will be upgraded along with restoration of the nearby Girl Scouts Fireplace.
- Picnic Area 4 (east side): Will be improved, with an assessment of the nearby gazebo.
- Courts: The tennis courts nearest to the playground will be rehabilitated or reconstructed to include new lighting, fencing, ADA sidewalks, nets and furniture.
- Walks: Portions of aging asphalt paths will be replaced with concrete to meet Denver Parks and Recreation (DPR) and ADA standards.
- Other Improvements:
-
- Assessment and potential rehabilitation/replacement of the pipe between Smith Lake and the lily pond.
- Identification of park areas for possible conversion to climate-resilient turf and plantings.
Public Engagement & Timeline
Engagement will include broad outreach to the general public and targeted efforts to involve communities most affected by the improvements, including groups that are often underrepresented in public processes.
