Green Corps Workforce Training
Denver Parks and Recreation’s (DPR) Green Corps was created to provide employment and job skills training opportunities to individuals who are new to the workforce, or those seeking a career transition into the Green Jobs industry. The program provides on-the-job training for individuals through various projects which primarily focus on creating resilient parks and landscapes that can adapt to the challenges of climate change.
It has been demonstrated that parks can reduce the surrounding air temperate by up to 6 degrees compared to areas with no parks or green space. With rising temperatures in urban environments, it is important these areas are protected and that more people recognize the value of these natural spaces. This program not only trains individuals to be successful in the Green Jobs industry but also teaches crew members how to become better stewards of the environment.
Green Corps members participate in projects such as enhancing wildlife habitat, planting trees and native plants, cleaning up waterways, managing noxious weeds, and restoring open space. Crew members will also learn about a broad spectrum of topics related to natural resources, ecology, water quality, wildfire mitigation, GIS technology, and more. In addition, participants will learn technical skills such as equipment operation and eco restoration, along with social and emotional skills like teamwork, conflict resolution, stress management, and budgeting.
The Green Corps program also provides the opportunity to engage with a variety of Green Jobs professionals, including Park Horticulturists, Park Managers, Irrigation Technicians, Project Managers, Planners, Foresters, Parks Directors, and many more. This workforce program is great for those who are new to the industry or are in the process of figuring out their career, as it is a chance to learn about many types of jobs and hear about personal career paths to getting a specific role.
Ideally, participants will return for two or three seasons and build upon skills developed from previous years, increasing their skill set through progressive professional development that lays the foundation for a successful career.
