Downtown Denver Vision Zero Safer Streets For All

Introduction

The United States Department of Transportation (DOT) created the Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) Grant Program to appropriate funding between 2022-2026 to improve transportation safety and reduce serious crashes and fatalities in cities across the US.   

The City and County of Denver was awarded $ 6,755,619 in the 2024 cycle by the US DOT and matched $ 1,688,905 for a total budget of $8,444,524.  The funding will be used to install transportation safety improvements in the Central Business District (CBD), Five Points, and Union Station neighborhoods in alignment with Denver’s 2022 Vision Zero Action Plan’s downtown Safety Focus Area.   

The safety improvements coming to the CBD, Five Points, and Union Station neighborhoods may include one or more of these safety changes:

2026: Procure Design and Public Engagement Contracts

• Obtain City Council Contract Approval

• Begin design and public engagement tasks

2027-2028: Achieve major design milestones (30%, 60%, 90% design phases)

2028: Complete engineering design

2028+: Procure construction contract, begin construction

The project timeline is an estimate and may be adjusted over time.

 

Public Involvement/Engagement

There is a public involvement/engagement effort planned to be conducted in parallel to the design and construction tasks to provide timely information and updates to residents, businesses, and other valued stakeholders.
