8th Avenue Viaduct Maintenance

Project Overview

The Denver Department of Transportation and Infrastructure (DOTI), in collaboration with Hamon Infrastructure, is scheduled to begin a viaduct rehabilitation project on 8th Avenue between Vallejo and Mariposa Street at the start of August. The project will replace the viaduct's expansion joints and spot-repair its bridge deck to support continued use by the traveling public. Expansion joints allow a bridge to expand and contract while preventing damage to the structure.

DOTI is investing approximately $1.5M in this bridge maintenance work with funding approved by voters as part of the Elevate Denver Bond.

No travel impacts expected until mid-November

Progress Notice

  • Since work began at the start of August, crews have been making structural preparations and repairs for the replacement of 8th Avenue's bridge expansion device. During this time, the bridge was reduced to a single lane of traffic and pedestrian access was intermittently closed with a shuttle service through the project work zone. The majority of all pedestrian walkway, concrete barrier, bridge overhang, and fencing repairs have been completed across the bridge.
  • Starting at the beginning of October, there will be no travel impacts on the bridge for pedestrian or vehicles while the new expansion joint is being manufactured. The project team anticipates this expansion joint will be ready for installation in mid-November, in which traffic impacts will resume. While the expansion joint replacement is underway, drivers can expect the bridge to be reduced to a single lane again with an automatic light device on either end of the bridge for up to two weeks. An additional notice will be sent with more details prior to impacts resuming.
  • Please continue to travel through the construction zone with caution while crews are not on site.
