Community Connectors, Advisory Board, and Oral Histories

Join the Advisory Board

We are looking for people to join our Advisory Board to advise the project team on high-level elements of the project. Advisory Board members will have connections within the Native communities in Denver, and/or have expertise on history, historic preservation, or community engagement. The Advisory Board will provide guidance for the project team, including input on proposed outreach strategies, historic context themes, and an overall perspective on the project. This will be an unpaid position.

Advisory Board Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Advise the project team on culturally appropriate outreach strategies and best practices
  • Provide ideas on the best ways to engage a broad spectrum of the community
  • Help spread the word about the project
  • Bring forward community comments or concerns about the project if/when they arise
  • Attend quarterly meetings with the project team

Become a Community Connector

We are seeking up to 10 trusted and passionate people to partner with to help build relationships between the city and Native communities. A willingness to make connections and take on a variety of tasks is essential to this role. The ideal candidate is deeply connected to the Native communities and is interested in ensuring this project reflects Denver’s diverse history and honors the cultural significance of the area. This will be a compensated position and is expected to last through 2024.

Ideal characteristics of a Community Connector include: 

  • Self-motivated, connected and trusted within the Native communities
  • Willing to meet people and respectfully engage in conversations around difficult or sensitive topics and histories
  • Ability to share information and solicit inclusive histories
  • Desire to work in collaborative teams and previous experience with community outreach
  • Strong preference for connectors who identify as American Indian, Native American, or Indigenous

Community Connectors roles and responsibilities:

  • Introduce the project team to community members
  • Provide ideas and feedback on the best ways to engage the larger community
  • Conduct oral history interviews or provide their own oral histories
  • Attend public meetings when available
  • Help spread the word about the project
  • Meet regularly with members of project team to coordinate outreach efforts
  • Bring forward community comments or concerns about the project if/when they arise
  • Review a draft historic context and provide feedback, comments, and concerns.

Provide an Oral History

We are also looking for members of the community who would like to provide an oral history for the project. Oral histories generally last about an hour and will be recorded. Oral histories may be conducted by members of the project team or Community Connectors and project interns. Recordings will be donated to the Denver Public Library at the conclusion of the project (along with other project materials).
