As a young mother new to Park Hill in the 1970s, Alice Kelly was looking for a way to meet her neighbors and get involved. Someone suggested she join the League of Women voters and, with her teaching background, the education committee was a perfect fit. Following a Supreme Court order, she was tapped to help lead peaceful desegregation efforts of Denver Public Schools and its busing system. That experience hooked her on community activism. She went on to help three mayors with the development of the Central Park neighborhood and its parks. Kelly spoke with I Am Denver about what she’s learned from her years of activism and why others should get involved in their neighborhoods.
