Early planning efforts for the East Corridor Rail Line considered multiple sites, generally around 61st and Pena and 72nd and Himalaya, for possible transit stations in the Gateway area. The Preferred Alternative in the East Corridor Project Final Environmental Impact Statement did not include any Gateway stations, but did acknowledge that RTD would “continue to coordinate with developers and local agencies on these potential stations”, and that additional environmental analysis and approvals are required if implemented in the future. The addition of one or more Gateway stations on the East Corridor, which is scheduled to begin rail service in 2016, would provide efficient access to Denver International Airport and be a potential catalyst for transit-oriented development. The TOD Strategic Plan identifies the Gateway Stations as Commuter Town Centers. The City and County of Denver will continue to work with RTD and other partners to implement one or more Gateway stations in the future.
