The SafeNite Curfew Program is a partnership between SCO and the Denver Police Department (DPD). The purpose of the program is to reduce the youth’s risk of becoming perpetrators or victims of crime and/or violence during curfew hours (Sun-Thurs. 11pm / Fri. -Sat. 12am to 5am). The program also helps limit the number of cases that go through the traditional court system (191J) and provides patrol officers with additional resources and a safe place to take youth when they come into contact with youth out after curfew. The SafeNite Curfew Program operates Friday through Sunday from April through September and is housed at DPD District 1 Police Station located at 1311 W. 46th Ave., Denver, CO 80211. Youth contacted after curfew hours on the weekends are taken to the curfew site and issued a citation while a call is placed to the home to alert the parents that their child has been picked up for violating curfew. Youth then meet with a Diversion Officer who completes a screening process to determine if the youth is eligible for Diversion and to address any immediate issues. If Diversion is accepted, the youth and parent(s) will meet with the Diversion Officer at a later date for a more thorough assessment and referral for services. If Diversion requirements are completed, the case is dismissed without making a court appearance thus avoiding court fees and fines. Those youth that are not eligible for Diversion or choose not to participate are given a date to appear in Courtroom 191J approximately three weeks from the date of pickup.
