Denver's Household Hazardous Waste Program

If you work around your home, yard, or garden, chances are you are storing some household products, that if disposed of improperly, may be harmful to you, your family, animals, and the environment. Items such as compact fluorescent bulbs, paint, pesticides, expired medications, cleaners, motor oil, and batteries can be toxic. They should not be thrown in the trash, poured down the drain or storm sewer, left at the curb or left in your alley.

To assist residents of the City & County of Denver in proper disposal and recycling of household hazardous wastes (HHW), the City is operates a door-to-door collection program of these materials directly from Denver homes. Residents may only use this program once per year and must be Denver Solid Waste Management customers, residing in a single family home, townhome, or apartment building of 7 units or fewer.  Denver residents that reside in multi-family buildings with more than 7 units are not eligible for a door-to-door collection, but may make an appointment to drop off items at the Denver Regional Household Hazardous Waste Facility. Residents using the door-to-door program or the drop-off facility will be responsible for a $20 co-payment.   Click here to learn more about the drop-off program.

Door-to-door home collection: How Does it Work?

1.  Determine if the materials you want to dispose of meet the program criteria.  Click here to learn more…

2.   Call 1-800-HHW-PKUP (1800-449-7587) for collection information and to schedule an appointment.

3.image of collection truck, serviceman, and female resident with her bag ofHHW ready for pick-up  A collection date is scheduled and a Kit is shipped: You will receive a collection Kit a few days before your scheduled collection. The Kit includes a bag to contain your materials, instructions, labels and a tie to secure the bag.

4. Before Your Collection: Assemble all of your HHW and $20 co-payment according to the instructions provided in the Kit. We will not accept materials without lids or those which are leaking or not labeled. Use provided labels to ensure materials are clearly marked. Containers must be of 5 gallon-capacity or less. The bag holds approximately 10 to 12 gallons of material. If you have more waste than will fit into the bag and are willing to pay for its collection, please call the 1-800 hotline for instructions.  To learn more about what items are accepted through this program, click on the "Program Criteria/Accepted Materials"- link in the right hand column of this page.

5. Household Hazardous Waste Materials Collected: On your collection day, place your HHW items and $20 co-payment out as instructed by your hotline representative by 7 AM. That’s it. You’re done. You do not even need to be home. A Customer Service Representative from Curbside will visit your house on your collection date, and pick up your waste. A confirmation receipt will be left for your records.

Helpful Hints:

  • Do not drag the bag, instead fill it in the location that it will be collected.
  • Do not overfill the bag! There are limits to the amount of material that we will collect (see above).
  • Make sure the bag is securely tied.
