Denver's HHW Collection Program

If you work around your home, yard, or garden, chances are you are storing some household products, that if disposed of improperly, may be harmful to you, your family, animals, and the environment. Items such as compact fluorescent bulbs, paint, pesticides, expired medications, cleaners, motor oil, and batteries can be toxic. They should not be thrown in the trash, poured down the drain or storm sewer, left at the curb or left in your alley.

To assist Denver residents in proper disposal and recycling of household hazardous wastes (HHW), the City is operating a door-to-door collection program of these materials directly from Denver homes. Residents may only use this program once per year and must be Denver Solid Waste Management customers, residing in a single family home, townhome, or apartment building of 7 units or fewer.

How Does it Work?

1. Call the HHW Hotline, 800-HHW-PKUP (800-449-7587) to request a collection: The operator will explain the program and ask you a few questions, including the type and amount of material you have for collection. An appointment will be arranged at that time.image of collection truck, serviceman, and female resident with her bag ofHHW ready for pick-up  You may also email your name, address and phone number to Curbside, Inc. at hotline@curbsideinc.com, then an operator will contact you back to schedule your appointment.

2. A collection date is scheduled and a Kit is shipped: You will receive a collection Kit within a few days of scheduling your collection. The Kit includes a bag to contain your materials, instructions, labels and a tie to secure the bag.

3. Before Your Collection: Assemble all of your HHW according to the instructions provided in the Kit. We will not accept materials without lids or those which are leaking. Use provided labels to ensure materials are clearly marked. Containers must have lids, and be of 5 gallon-capacity or less. The bag holds approximately 125 pounds. If you have more waste than will fit into the bag and are willing to pay for its collection, please call the hotline for instructions.image of collection truck, serviceman, and female resident with her bag ofHHW ready for pick-up

4. Household Hazardous Waste Materials Collected: On your collection day, place your HHW items as instructed by your hotline representative by 7 AM. That’s it. You’re done. You do not even need to be home. A Customer Service Representative from Curbside will visit your house on your collection date, and pick up your waste. A confirmation receipt will be left for your records.

Helpful Hints:
  • Do not drag the bag, instead fill it in the location that it will be collected.
  • Do not overfill the bag! There are limits to the amount of material that we will collect (see above).
  • Make sure the bag is securely tied.
You are limited to whatever fits into the bag. If you wish to pay for the disposal of more items,
call the hotline: 800-HHW-PKUP (800-449-7587).
