Axum Park

First documented through the camera lenses of Park Hill residents, the disrepair of the City of Axum Park at Martin Luther King Boulevard and Cherry Street was unmistakable. Identified by local residents as a “trouble spot” and underutilized community resource, PHTC partnered with Denver Parks and Recreation (DPR) to address the issue. With funding provided by the Better Denver Bond Program, major park renovations by DPR became possible. PHTC led community involvement in the park renovations design and in collaboration with VOC created a multi-use trail within the park...

  • A Denver Healthy People Park Hill Thriving Communities (PHTC) report on the use of Northeast Park Hill’s City of Axum Park shows that public use of the park skyrocketed by 500% since the city completed a nearly $500,000 overhaul in October of 2010. In Summer 2007, the City of Axum Park was identified by local residents through PHTC as a “trouble spot” and an underutilized community resource. PHTC led resident advocacy for improvements, building partnerships with Denver Parks and Recreation and others for action. The renovation came to fruiting thanks to the 2007 voter-approved Better Denver Bond Project and in-kind support from Volunteers for Outdoor Colorado (VOC), Park Hill Thriving Communities (PHTC) and LiveWell Colorado.
