The Career Counseling Program provides guidance on creating a personalized career management strategy. Career Counseling is a planning and development process designed to support work priorities and development needs. Our goal is to provide you with access to resources which will support career decision-making, career exploration, and provide opportunities to develop the skills necessary to conduct a successful job search.

Policies This service is strictly confidential. Administrative leave may be used for Career Counseling, with permission from your supervisor or manager per CSA rules. Career Counseling is a voluntary program and is exempt from the grievance and appeals process.

Assessment

The CAREERS Program offers Accuplacer and Pre-Valuate assessments to City employees as a tool for evaluating their academic strengths and weaknesses. Below is an explanation of each assessment:

ACCUPLACER assessments assess an employee's skill levels in reading, writing/grammar, and math. The assessments identify areas of skill development and training programs that would benefit an employee's professional development. The assessments can also aid the employee with identifying what academic courses an employee should enroll in when pursuing continuing education coursework.

PRE-VALUATE assessments assess an employee's skills in various Microsoft office products as well as customer service, legal, accounting, medical, etc. It provides employees with a comprehensive report as to where their skill level is on various programs. The assessment identifies basic skills, intermediate, and advanced levels. Using the pre-valuate assessment employees can determine which classes are most appropriate in personal and professional development.
