Denver Healthy People 2010
HP2010 - The National Model
Healthy People 2010 is a statement of health objectives designed to identify the most significant preventable threats to health as well as the assets available to address them comprehensively. The overarching goals of
Healthy People 2010 reflect the changing demographics of the U.S. - a population that is growing older and more diverse.
The first goal of
HP2010 is to
Increase Quality and Years of Healthy Life by helping individuals gain the knowledge, motivation, and opportunities they need to make informed decisions about their health. The second goal of the national model is to
Eliminate Health Disparities among segments of the population, including differences that occur by gender, race or ethnicity, education or income, disability, geographic location, or sexual orientation.
Progress in achieving the two goals of
Healthy People 2010 will be monitored through 467 objectives in 28
Focus
Areas. Each objective has a target for specific improvements to be achieved by the year 2010. The Denver Initiative proposes to advance the national
HP2010 goals by developing and achieving objectives in those focus areas that are identified as health priorities for the City and County of Denver.
Finally, ten
Leading Health Indicators will be used to measure the health of the Nation over the next decade. As a group, these reflect the major health concerns in the United States at the beginning of the 21st century, and have been chosen based on their ability to motivate action, the availability of data to measure their progress, and their relevance as broad public health issues.
