Mental Health Transition Units
The Men’s and Women’s Mental Health Transition Units at the Denver County Jail opened in April 2007 and January 2009, respectively. The transition units each have the capacity to house approximately 50 incarcerated clients. To participate, clients must be diagnosed with an Axis I mental illness, must acknowledge that they have a mental illness, and work to comply with the various treatment methods of the unit. The goal of the unit is to treat and transition clients back into the jail’s general population and community.  In addition to specially trained Sheriff Deputies and mental health staff, the unit has reentry specialists that help inmates obtain benefits, identification and develop a plan for community reentry.  A Bureau of Justice Assistance Prisoner Reentry Initiative grant resulted in the opening of the female transition unit. In addition to dedicated mental health services for women, this unit highlights reentry services provided by community-based providers, Denver Inner City Parish and the Empowerment Program.  While the Sheriff Department covers the cost of the women’s unit and part of the men’ unit, CPCC provides for the men’s unit reentry specialists.
