The mission of the Denver Crime Prevention and Control Commission is to create and execute an evidence-based, accountable, and efficient public safety strategy to reduce crime and delinquency in Denver.
Established by City Ordinance in April, 2005, the Crime Prevention and Control Commission was seated and began its operations in September, 2005. The Commission is housed within the Manager of Safety's Office and is composed of 32 designated system representatives and appointed community members.The 32-member Commission is appointed by the Mayor of Denver and serves in an advisory capacity to Denver's criminal justice system agencies.
Gary Wilson, Undersheriff/Director of Corrections for the Denver Sheriff Department, chairs the Commission. Past chairs include Manager of Safety Charles Garcia (2008-2010) and City Councilmen Rick Garcia (2005-2006) and Doug Linkhart (2006-2008). The Executive Director of the Commission is Regina Huerter.
The Commission's goals are:
1) Better management of jail beds
2) Reduce the need for jail beds
3) Recidivism Reduction
The Commission achieves its work through five committees:
