Montclair Storm Drainage Project - Phase II
The drainage basin (view basin map) that drains into the Montclair Phase I & II storm systems extends to 8th Avenue and Pontiac St. Within this basin there are numerous sump areas with several flooding incidents that have been documented. Specifically, flooding that has occurred in the area of 6th and N. Hudson St., E. Severn Place between Jersey St. and Jasmine St., and near 8th Ave. and Pontiac St. drain into the Montclair System.

In order for these flooding problems to be mitigated, we must begin the construction at the downstream end of this master planned system which is determined to be Ferril Lake in City Park and work upstream. Ferril Lake was chosen as the downstream point because it could be used as a detention system. The lake was improved during the Montclair Phase I construction to detain flows so that existing downstream storm systems that feed into the South Platte River will be able to carry the Montclair system’s drainage basin.

The Montclair Storm Sewer Phase II Project is upstream of the Montclair Phase I project. Phase I ended at the south end of 17th and Jackson Street with a 14’x9’ reinforced concrete box pipe. Montclair Phase II will tie into this 14’x9’ box with a 14’x7’ reinforced box culvert, which will continue south on Jackson Street and end just before its intersection with Colfax.

Future phases of this project are approximated to continue east on Colfax Ave. to Garfield St. , then south on Garfield Street to E 12th Ave to Hale Parkway. That will allow the storm systems that mitigate the 6th and N. Hudson St. flooding, the flooding in E. Severn Place between Jersey St. and Jasmine St. , and the flooding near 8th Ave. and Pontiac St. to successfully drain into the Montclair storm system that is large enough to carry the flows that are generated in these flooding problem areas.
