DCOA Goals

 

 

2012 Denver Commission on Aging Goals & Activities

DCOA SPECIFIC MISSION: To make Denver the best community for older adults through outreach, communication, and advocacy.

 

GOAL: Identify and increase DCOA participation and communication in issues and concerns that impact or are of importance to aging well in the City and County of Denver.  Work with HRCR to implement The Age Matters Initiative per the Mayor’s request.

 

Strategy: Create and maintain an advocacy plan for the Denver Commission on Aging.  

Objective – Link and partner with city, county and state advocates to increase awareness of senior issues and legislation.

 

 

Action/Plan:

Encourage and facilitate new DCOA members to join list serves/websites for Senior Lobby, Senior Briefing, AARP.

 

Invite advocate related speakers to DCOA meetings.

Members Participation in meetings/events pertaining to  Senior Issues

 

 

 

Brief DCOA monthly meetings on senior legislation during the legislative session.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Steps/Status:

 

Continually work with other groups and committees.

 

 

 

Will engage specific speakers to come visit DCOA meetings that fall in line with our goals and objectives for the year.

 

 

Member(s) attend Senior Lobby meeting (Mondays-9:30AM) during legislative session.  Meet with City Council/Mayor’s office as necessary.  Monthly – Denver County Police Department advisory meetings.

 

 

Attend events such as Mayor’s Spring Into Health, 2011 Senior Day at the Capitol, Salute to Seniors.  Elder Abuse Awareness day events.

 

Legislative updates were provided during the Legislative Session 2011 at each DCOA monthly meeting and send recommendations to Mayor’s Office.

 

 

 

 

Strategy: Create and maintain an Outreach plan for the Denver Commission on Aging.

Objective: Identify community sites to communicate about senior issues and concerns.

 

 

Action Plan:

 

Identify outreach projects to engage the community and educate older adults

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Identify gaps in services for outreach projects and determine how our collaborative efforts will provide services to the older adult community

 

 

 

 

 

Choose location communities to present educational presentations.

 

 

 

Work with the Mayor’s Office and the Denver Office on Aging to implement the Age Matters Initiative

 

 

 

Engage City Council members to assist the Commission on the Aging Matters Initiative

 

 

 

 

 

Workforce Development Strategies

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Steps/Status:

 

Will be delivering educational outreach on the following topics:

  • Foreclosures – Legal help for Older Adults
  • Healthy Aging – Healthy Eating and Nutrition
  • Medicare & Medicaid – Educate and maximize benefits

 

 

“Map” areas, both statistically as well as identifying resources, of existing service groups, be it established neighborhood programs, NORC’s, or block by block  neighbors helping neighbors, or miscellaneous providers to identify areas are lacking in assistance.

 

 

Identify starting location communities, i.e. housing facilities, senior recreation centers, and other places seniors gather.

 

 

Planning has begun for the entire Commission to assist with this initiative starting with the actions above.

 

 

 

Have council members assist in developing what resources are already in their districts; venues where seniors gather regularly; and partner with district events pertaining to seniors.

 

 

Identify educational resources, available jobs for seniors, and/or areas where seniors can volunteer or work as they are a vital group that is able to give back to the community.

Strategy: Create and maintain a communications plan for the Denver Commission on Aging.

Objective – Create education and awareness materials through various marketing and communication methods.  Charged with gathering and preparing information and “messaging” for the Commission.

 

       

Action/Plan:

Review messaging and desired image of DCOA.

 

 

 

Identify/create presentation opportunities for DCOA.

 

 

 

 

Identify regular communication vehicles (e.g., articles in Your Hub, e-newsletters, neighborhood papers, etc.)

 

 

Explore the cost of desired media and recommend an appropriate balance between print, electronic, and live communication.

 

 

 

 

 

Steps/Status:

 

Will oversee specific branding work.  Maintain logo, brochure and resource guide, and website information.  Create social media page (facebook?)

Develop talking points and PowerPoint presentation for commissioners to use when conducting outreach activities and presentations.

 

 

Create DCOA list serve for notifications.  Distribute monthly meeting information to identified sources.

Investigate different types of media output, costs, deadlines, and requirements for distribution.

Representation at HRCR Advisory Committee meetings

 

 

 

Prioritize partnerships according to DCOA needs and goals.

 

 

 

Provide prioritized groups with educational information on aging issues as related to their areas of interest and need.

Lee Ragon is the DCOA representative and Joe Anzures is the alternate.

 

 

 

Continue regular communication with prioritized Commissions: Latino, Women, GLBT, Disabilities, etc.
