Denver Police Department - Victim Assistance Unit
The Victim Assistance Unit (VAU) of the Denver Police Department implemented a very valuable Senior Companion Program in 2007 through a memorandum of understanding and partnership with Seniors Inc. that has served senior citizens in Colorado through various programs and services since 1969.
The Senior Companion Program is designed to provide direct services (i.e. transportation to medical appointments, grocery shopping, help running errands) and in-home companionship to elderly and disabled adult victims of crime whose cases have been reported to the Denver Police Department.
Willa Wilkinson is the VAU Senior Companion. She is a retired professional who works with the VAU 20 hours per week. Willa makes outreach calls to elderly victims of property crimes from across the City. She is able to assist these victims with trips to the grocery store, medical appointments, arranging for additional community support services and in-home companionship on a regular or as-need basis.
All services provided by the VAU Senior Companion Program are free of charge.
The Victim Assistance Unit is pleased to be able to provide this unique and necessary resource to an often underserved population of victims who may be particularly vulnerable or at greater risk of victimization.
