2010 SERVICE CHANGES TO
OVERFLOW TRASH COLLECTION AND LARGE ITEM PICK UP
Overflow trash collection in barrel service areas collected by Denver Public Works Solid Waste Management will now take place once every three weeks. Previously, overflow trash collection in barrel service areas took place on a weekly basis.
Large Item Pickup collection service for Denver residents that have trash collection service from Denver Public Works Solid Waste Management will now take place once every nine weeks. Previously, LIP collection took place once every five weeks.
These service changes were recommended by Solid Waste Management as a way to save money at a time when the City is facing a $160 million budget shortfall. The recommendations were approved by City Council and the Mayor and underwent a public process from September to November.
Overflow Trash Collection
- Overflow trash is any household trash placed outside of the City-issued black trash barrel and collected by a separate truck on a manual route.
- A limit of 10 overflow bags or containers (no larger than 32 gallons in size) will be picked up per collection.
- Barrel overflow service does not collect large items like mattresses and furniture.
- Residents are responsible for litter created by overflow being left out.
- Residents not already participating in the recycling program are encouraged to sign up for Denver’s free recycling service. Participating in the recycling program can significantly reduce the need for overflow trash collection. Sign up online here
- As residents adjust to this change, overflow trash set out will be tagged with a note reminding citizens of the service change.
