CONSTRUCTION UPDATE Denver Gulch
Bridges Construction in the Dry Gulch area is moving
along quickly. The decks and overhangs on both the Dry
Gulch East and West bridges have been formed and crews expect
to pour the deck this week. Fencing and waterproofing
will follow and crews from Edward Kraemer and Sons will be
complete in January.
The pedestrian bridge at Wolff
Street is completed and crews are working on setting piers for
the bridge at Hazel Court. Current scheduling
shows this bridge being set in early January. The
pedestrian bridge at Tennyson Street is still being fabricated
and crews are working on backfilling the abutments in
preparation of placement of the Tennyson bridge
deck.
Storm Sewer/Storm Drainage
Upgrades Work on the sewer and storm drainage upgrades
are moving along quickly. Work at 13th and Pikeview,
13th & Holland and 13th and Quail has been
completed. Crews are currently working on the crossing
at Collins, just east of Simms. Collins Street in this
area is closed to traffic during business hours. In
early January, improvements to the storm drainage system on
Lamar Street and Pierce Street will begin. Work at both
of these locations will require lane closures, but the streets
will remain open. Please visit the West Corridor Web
site Construction
Information for current road closures.
Kipling
Walls Denver Transit Construction Group has resumed
construction work at the Kipling Street Bridge. Crews
have been moving in dirt to raise the elevation in the
area. Mechanically Stabilized Earth (MSE) walls will
soon be built for the bridge approaches on both the east and
west sides of the bridge. These are the walls that will hold
up the track for the train to cross Kipling. This activity
will take several months but will not impact traffic, as crews
will be working in the RTD right-of-way along the rail
bed. However, you may experience construction equipment
moving in and out of the RTD staging area on the corner of
Lakewood Heights Drive and Kipling Street. To see the design
on the MSE/approach walls at Kipling, click
here.
Jefferson County Government
Center Crews have recently mobilized at the Jeffco
Government Center to relocate the water line located on the
west side of the facility. Work on this phase should
take about one month. There are no expected traffic
impacts for this activity.
MATT COHEN, RTD DIRECTOR,
DISTRICT M In November, the community in District M
that largely covers Lakewood, Wheat Ridge and parts of Golden
elected Matt Cohen to the RTD Board of Directors. Mr.
Cohen, a graduate of Denver’s East High School, is a
residential Realtor for Re/Max Alliance and attended Cornell
University and the University of Colorado at Denver. He
sits on the Board of Directors for the Jefferson County
Association of Realtors and is a Trustee for the Metro Denver
Realtor Foundation.
Matt has extensive
training in Transit-Oriented Development, graduating in the
first class of the Transit Alliance Citizens’ Academy in
2007. He also completed a class at the Lakewood
Citizens’ Planning Academy. This training will be very
helpful throughout construction of the West Corridor, which
runs primarily through his RTD District.
Matt, his
wife, Terri, and their four children live in Lakewood, where
he is a dedicated volunteer and coach. His community
service efforts include serving as the Vice President of Micro
Soccer, a program for over four-hundred 3-7 year olds for the
Colorado Ice Soccer Club. He is a 13-year volunteer with
the National Sports Center for the Disabled in Winter Park and
is the 2008/09 Club President and Board President of the Wheat
Ridge Optimists.
The West Corridor team is
excited to have Matt on board and will work closely with him
to facilitate the needs of the community through the
construction phase of this project.
We also want to
take this opportunity to thank outgoing Director Dave Ruchman
who has dedicated many long hours to representing the
Lakewood/Jefferson County community along the West
Corridor. Thanks Dave. We’ll miss you!
PROJECT SPOTLIGHT For the
past seven years, Dennis Cole has been fervently working to
move the West Corridor Light Rail Corridor from vision to
reality. As RTD’s West Corridor Project Manager, Dennis’
involvement embraces all phases of the project from concept to
planning, from planning to design and finally from design to
construction. His leadership has been the catalyst
for the step-by-step progress of the West Corridor
line.
Dennis’ experience with RTD is a repertoire of
excellence, including Project Manager/Architect of Record and
Construction Manager for the US36/Flatiron park-n-Ride, Design
Project Manager/Architect of Record for the Central Platte
Valley Light Rail Transit Spur, Project Architect for the
36/McCaslin park-n-Ride and pedestrian bridge, Project Manager
for the Westminster parking structure and the Deputy
Engineering Project Manager for the West Corridor project
during the EIS/PE phase.
Dennis has a degree in
Architecture from North Dakota State University, and his
experience includes transit architecture, rail design, track
layout, scheduling, budgeting, construction management and
architectural design. He has a personal commitment to
create a transit project that benefits both RTD and the
community.
Personally, Dennis enjoys motorcycles and
the outdoors. This summer he took a rafting trip down
the middle fork of the Salmon River in
Idaho. Dennis has been married to his wife,
Pam, for 26 years and resides in Louisville. The Coles
have four children, three sons and one daughter.
The
West Corridor is lucky to have Dennis Cole leading the way on
the project, and his perseverance and determination to bring
this project to fruition is an added bonus for the West
Corridor community.
