Solid Waste Management - Services and Programs Minimize

At Denver Public Works, a multi-service division called Solid Waste Management provides waste management service for 165,000 homes in our city.  We collect over 256,000 tons of trash at Denver homes each year.  That's an average of 1.6 tons per household a year.  Solid Waste Management uses an integrated collection strategy to recycle or dispose of waste in an efficient and cost-effective manner.

Each week Solid Waste Management crews make their rounds, collecting trash and recycling from curbsides and alleyways.  At other scheduled times we collect large items such as unwanted appliances and furniture as well as household chemicalsOther programs enhance the beauty of our city by removing graffiti, controlling litter, educating residents and organizing events to partner with residents in maintaining clean, livable neighborhoods.

Denver Recycles encourages environmentally responsible purchasing and disposal habits in your homes, at work and at school in an effort to reduce the volume and toxicity of our waste stream.  Denver Recycles collects recycling every other week from Denver residents at no additional cost to the resident. If you are a Solid Waste Management customer and are not presently recycling, please call 3-1-1
to register or you can sign up on-line.

Because more than 20 percent of our residential waste stream is made up of yard trimmings and leaves, Denver Recycles also sponsors several yard-waste reduction and reuse programs to keep these materials out of our landfills and recycle them into beneficial products.  Current recorded information is available by calling our special events line at
720-865-6810.  These programs include:
Backyard Composting LeafDrop, Treecycle, and the Spring Compost Sale & Mulch Giveaway Event.
