 Non-Profits: Take the Challenge! Minimize
It won’t make you rich, but it could help you through your next unexpected expense

Is your nonprofit organization looking for new and creative ways to mobilize volunteers and to raise funds? Denver Elections Division is offering a challenge to nonprofit organizations in the form of an opportunity to raise money through volunteer work. With an anticipated record voter turnout for the November 4 General Election, the Denver Elections Division needs to recruit some 2,000 Election Day poll workers. We are paying each volunteer $120, or up to $230 for supervisors, to work a long but satisfying 14-hour day at one of 185 polling places around the city.

Marshal your volunteers to become Election Day poll workers, with their pledge to donate their fee back to your organization. We get the help we need, you get donations and a cause to rally volunteers around (pick a particular issue you need to raise funds around), and the volunteers get several benefits: the satisfaction of helping voters participate in one of their fundamental democratic rights; the means to help one of their favorite nonprofit organizations; and perhaps a tax deduction to boot. They will also be served a nice lunch that day, on the Elections Divison, at their designated polling place.

See a list of participating organizations with links back to their websites and email addresses. This is to assist organizations in encouraging volunteers to sign up. Participating organizations will also receive a Certificate of Appreciation from the Denver Clerk and Recorder, who administers the Elections Division.

Denver poll workers must be Denver residents who are registered to vote. Find additional requirements for poll workers on this page, above, and a poll worker application form.

 Challenge FAQ Minimize

Does my organization need to be a bona fide 501-C-3 charitable organization to participate in the challenge?
No! We encourage organizations of many kinds to participate, including: schools, service clubs, neighborhood organizations, parent-teacher organizations, social clubs, sports clubs, bridge clubs, campus clubs and study groups. All you need is an enthusiasm to participate and a desire to be part of the electoral process.

What is the deadline for participating?
There is no set deadline, but remember that poll workers are required to attend a two-hour training sessionahead of time. Training sessions for the General Election have begun, and are currently scheduled to take place until Wednesday, October 29. There are four training sessions per day, and poll workers must reserve a spot ahead of time. We are expecting a heavy demand for those later classes, and class size is being limited in order to maximize the quality of the training.

Do my potential volunteers all have to be Denver residents?
All Denver poll workers must be Denver residents and registered voters. But that doesn't necessarily mean that your volunteers who live in other counties cannot participate with you. All of Colorado's counties are recruiting poll workers, and all pay a fee for this service by citizens. Your volunteers who live in counties other than Denver can apply to be a poll worker in their own county and donate their fees back to your organization.

Can the Elections Division pay the volunteers' Election Day fees directly to the nonprofit organization?
No. We must pay our poll workers directly. Therefore, you must organize your volunteers and your participation in our challenge. Your volunteers must donate their poll worker fees to you themselves.

What if some of my volunteers drop out?
Because working at the polls on Election Day is an optional activity that takes place only a couple of times each year, we experience an expected rate of attrition in citizens who apply. Therefore, if your organization has decided to set a participation goal in this challenge, we recommend that you recruit more volunteers than you would need to reach your goal.
