Celebrates Earth Day 2007
"Share the Earth"
The Earth Day 2007 celebration kicked off with a tree planting in Civic Center Park and the release of white doves from White Birds Unlimited the morning of Friday, April 20th.
The rest of the days activities were just as fun! There was an Earth Day fair inside the Wellington Webb Building, with special appearances by the Colorado Ice Arena Football team and alternative fuel vehicles on display.
The 3rd Annual Environmental Champion Awards were distributed to City employees nominated by their peers who have shown leadership in the workplace surrounding sustainability in the workplace. The winners were:

Patrick Ertel: Parks and Recreation, for his work on herbicide reduction;

Christian Williss: General Services, for Christian's ork on City wide green initiatives;
-
Sid Schwarz: Parks and Recreation, for pioneering the use of water-based wood floor finishing products;
-
Robert Castaneda and his Fleet Management staff: Public Works, for retooling how car and truck parts are cleaned to eliminate hazardous waste while cleaning the parts;
-
Jim McIntyre, his buyers, and his staff: Purchasing, for institutionalizing green procument processes; and
-
the Urban Forestry Wood Revitalization Program - Forestry Field Operations Unit: Parks and Recreation/Natural Resouces, converts residue from tree pruning and removal into mulch to be put around new trees, plants, and shrubs instead of taking the mulch to the landfill.
The event also featured HELLO Foundation's Children's Writing Project with several children reading essays and poems about peace and the environment.
Thanks to everyone who attended and volunteered to make the event a huge success!

"The Future is Green"
A thousand thanks to the volunteers and exhibitors who made our Earth Day 2006 celebration - The Future is Green - was a success!

Gregg Thomas from the Department of Environmental Health welcomed children from area schools as they planted a tree in Civic Center Park.

Councilwoman Peggy Lehmann joined in the festivities.

K'Lei and Antonio from the HELLO Foundation, Inc., joined the Manager of the Department of Environmental Health, Nancy Severson, to celebrate Earth Day 2006 and pass along good will, good wishes and peace on earth.

Gameshow Emcee Steve Gonzales explained recycling to a group of local school children. Steve said, "Let them eat cake!" And they did.
Gameshow Hostess Becka Larson (left) helped the kids with environmentally correct answers while the emcee looked for another piece of cake. Bob Schlageter, "Magic Bob", (right) kept the children spellbound.
