What’s Going on With Gangs?

Watch this month's Dialogue: Denver D.A. ONLINE

The public dialogue about gangs and gang activity has heated up over the summer.  Is it media hype or are there serious concerns? And, what can we do to keep kids out of gangs?  A former gang member, Terrance Roberts, who now works to keep kids out of gangs, joins Denver D.A. Mitch Morrissey on this edition of Dialogue: Denver D.A.

“Wannabes are gonnabes."

Those who are interested in joining gangs are going to find ways to get into gangs.  That’s why intervention is so important.

  • Nationally, gang members were responsible for 12% of all aggravated assaults that occurred between 1993 and 2003

  • According to the FBI's Supplementary Homicide Reports, each year between 8% and 10% of homicides committed with a firearm are gang related.

  • On average, gang members commit about 373,000 of the 6.6 million violent crimes every year in this country.

  • There is a link between gang activity and graffiti, although not all graffiti is gang-related.

  • All graffiti, whether it is gang-related or not, should be reported to law enforcement and then cleaned up as soon as possible.

  • Mentoring, being a good role model, involved parenting and being available to young people are all ways to help keep a child out of a gang.
