2006 Denver Radium Streets Projects

2006 Denver Radium Streets Projects

The remedial activities performed as part of the Radium Streets Projects in 2006 included evaluating and securing an appropriately permitted low-level radioactive materials disposal facility located in Adams County, Colorado.  These activities are further described below.

Evaluation of a Adams County Disposal Facility:

The CCoD utilized an Adams County disposal facility by performing a pilot test by which low-level radioactive materials temporarily stored at the CCoD's permitted Denver International Airport (DIA) facility were loaded, transported and disposed of at the off-site facility.  These efforts were performed to ensure the transportation and disposal program will be effective for the proposed 2007 Denver Radium Streets Projects.

As part of the trial test, CCoD screened six containers of low-level radioactive materials for radioactivity as well as labeled the containers to ensure they are properly prepared and managed in accordance with Department of Transportation (DOT) requirements.  The materials were labeled and disposed of as exempt radiological materials. Once the containers were cleared of DOT screening protocols and appropriately labeled, the containers were loaded onto a flatbed truck for transportation and disposal at a facility in Adams County, Colorado
