Denver businesses caught selling alcohol to minors

The Denver Police Department recently cited eight Denver businesses caught selling alcohol to a minor.  Fifteen establishments were ordered to appear before the Excise and License Bureau for license review.  The department’s Alcohol Enforcement Team conducted an age compliance operation February 15th, during which 27 bars, four liquor stores and one gas station were visited.

A release from the Denver Police Department says law enforcement officials were encouraged that the majority of establishments followed proper protocols, asking for I.D.’s and turning away minors who were trying to purchase alcohol.  They say that by doing so the businesses support efforts to curtail underage drinking.

The Denver Police Department is the recipient of an Enforcing Underage Drinking Laws (EUDL) grant from the Colorado Liquor Enforcement Division that will allow the Department to proactively address underage drinking violations in the City and County of Denver.  These federal dollars are distributed to individual states through the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP).  The Denver Police Department is one of just six agencies awarded the grant after a competitive application process.

The Department has identified a number of officers with a special interest in youth-related issues who will form an Alcohol Enforcement Team whose purpose will be conduct age compliance checks and to police events and locations at which underage drinking may occur and to identify those who are providing alcohol to minors.
