FIRST DENVER JUSTICE CENTER BUILDING OFFICIALLY OPEN
Justice Center Post Office/Parking Garage Building open for business

Mayor John Hickenlooper and District 10 Councilwoman Jeanne Robb on October 9th, officially opened the Post Office/Parking Garage building.  They were joined by Denver Postmaster Alan Catlin and representatives of the Golden Triangle Association.

“In 2005, Denver residents approved the Justice Center initiative and voted to invest in the safety of our community. Today, the opening of the Post Office/Parking Garage Building is an important first step in creating a criminal justice infrastructure that is safer and more humane,” Hickenlooper said. “We are grateful to all of our partners in the Golden Triangle neighborhood, the architecture community and the criminal justice system for their commitment to justice for all in Denver.”

Completion of the new Post Office allows the City to clear the site of the old Post Office and build the new Courthouse there. When designing the Post Office/Parking Garage Building, the City was careful to choose materials and architectural vernacular that complements existing buildings in the Civic Center District. Besides the Post Office, 10,000 square feet of retail space has been constructed to enhance the neighborhood and pedestrian experience for those living in and visiting the Golden Triangle.

“The parking garage will be many people's portal to the Justice Center so coordinating the design, providing street level retail and narrowing 14th were essential,” said Robb, in whose council district the Denver Justice Center complex resides.

With the Post Office as a major tenant, the City worked closely with the Golden Triangle Association and United States Postal Service to adhere to tight timelines and design guidelines. The result is one of the most efficient and effective neighborhood Post Offices in the region.

“The City of Denver has done an extraordinary job. They have delivered a beautiful, first-class Post Office and facility that our Denver Golden Triangle area customers and postal employees can be extremely proud of,” says Denver Postmaster Alan Catlin. “We applaud the City for its Mile High efforts.”

The Post Office/Parking Garage Building features 637 parking spaces on five floors. The total area of the building is 241,219 square feet.

The Denver Justice Center complex, which will also include a new courthouse and detention facility, is located in downtown Denver between West Colfax Avenue and West 13th Avenue and Fox Street and Delaware Street. Construction is scheduled to be completed in 2010.
