Mayor Names New City Attorney Tuesday, October 14, 2008 | 49 ° Mostly Cloudy   Judge Lawrence Manzanares will assume his new post on January 9, 2007.     Mayor John Hickenlooper announced Thursday, November 30, 2006 his appointment of Denver District Court Judge Lawrence Manzanares to the position of City Attorney. “Judge Manzanares has enjoyed a distinguished career as a judge and private attorney in Denver, having presided over a variety of civil and criminal cases, practiced in numerous areas of law and established an impressive track record in the realm of mediation and dispute resolution,” Hickenlooper said. “He is widely respected by his peers in the legal community and by the Denver community at large. We look forward to having someone of his caliber and experience joining our team.” Manzanares will assume his new post on January 9, 2007, which is judicial term day – the day when judicial courtroom rotations take place. His appointment follows the September announcement that City Attorney Cole Finegan had decided to pursue new opportunities as of December. “I am deeply honored to have been selected by Mayor Hickenlooper to serve the people of Denver as City Attorney,” Manzanares said. “While I am grateful to have had the privilege of serving as a judge in the Denver County and District courts, I am excited to move on to this new public service opportunity. I look forward to working with the Mayor and the City Attorney’s staff to continue to foster excellence in government in service of the citizens of Denver.” About Lawrence Manzanares Manzanares brings a quarter-century of legal experience to his new role as City Attorney, including 10 years in corporate law and commercial litigation and 14 years on the judicial bench. He began his legal career as an attorney with Davis Graham & Stubbs in 1982 and subsequently practiced with Roath & Brega P.C. from 1986 to 1989 and with Brega & Winters P.C. from 1989 to 1992 before being appointed a Denver County Court judge in 1992. He served in that capacity until 1998 when he was appointed to Denver District Court, where he currently presides in the civil division. As a private attorney, Manzanares practiced in areas of corporate law, commercial litigation (including antitrust, securities, products liability, Lanham Act and employment litigation), professional malpractice, debtor/creditor rights and banking. As a judge, he has presided over civil, criminal, domestic and restraining order cases. In June 2006, the Denver Bar Association recognized Manzanares with its Judicial Excellence Award. Manzanares has published articles and chapters in the area of professional responsibility, civil procedure, and trial practice and has been active in numerous professional associations, non-profit organizations, and educational activities. He has taught numerous legal courses for law students as well as practicing attorneys in the areas of commercial transactions, domestic violence, trial practice, evidence, and legal ethics. Manzanares has served on the Colorado Supreme Court Appellate Rules Committee since 2003. He is currently on the board of directors of the Colorado Hispanic Bar Association, the Colorado I Have a Dream Foundation and Project PAVE (Promoting Alternatives to Violence through Education). He is a former board member and president of both LARASA (Latin American Research and Service Agency) and the Mi Casa Resource Center for Women. He has also served on various advisory committees for Denver Public Schools, including the Citizens Budget Task Force, the School Facilities Review Committee and the Mill Levy Oversight Committee. A native Coloradan and alumnus of Littleton’s Arapahoe High School, he graduated magna cum laude from the University of Denver with a bachelor’s degree in psychology and received his law degree from Harvard University.
