Pro-active Measures to Combat Foreclosure Problems
Michael Hancock, President of the Denver City Council and Task Force Co-Chairs, Councilmember Rick Garcia, and Joshua Widoff, Esq. announced today the completion of the Foreclosure Task Force recommendations report. The report focuses on strategies related to education, prevention, intervention, and enforcement as pro-active measures to combat foreclosure problems. Councilmember Hancock convened the task force comprised of various community experts to evaluate the issues of foreclosure and to provide recommendations.
Available report outlines the issues, national best practices, partnerships, and foreclosure goals
The Task Force met weekly for six weeks beginning in January 2007 to discuss the high incidences of foreclosure in many of Denver’s communities. The task force evaluated national best practices and developed recommendations that would help to promote sustainable homeownership. Education and multi-lingual programs were critical components identified to help guard against risky mortgage products and to help prepare individuals for long-term homeownership
“I represent District 11, one of the highest areas of the City impacted by foreclosure, and I felt it was time Denver seriously looked at the negative impacts this was having in our neighborhoods and I wanted to begin the necessary steps to collaboratively change many of the issues such as the lack of education, employment concerns, mortgage issues, and language barriers that resulted in people loosing their homes,” stated Councilman Hancock.
“In order to eradicate the growing trend of foreclosure problems, the City must look to all of its partners to find solutions that will help to promote sustainable homeownership and to protect the quality of life in Denver neighborhoods”, stated Councilmember Garcia. He noted that Denver supported legislation this year at the State level that will help to create a more comprehensive and collaborative approach to foreclosure problems associated with various mortgage processes and products.
The attached report outlines the issues, national best practices, partnerships, and foreclosure goals. It is the intention of the Denver City Council to continue to work with local, state, and federal legislators as well as private sector representatives to change current conditions and to create healthy neighborhoods.
