  Mayor's Arts Awards Seeks Nominations Tuesday, October 07, 2008 | 40 ° Clear  

Arts AwardNOVEMBER 10, 2006 -- Mayor John Hickenlooper and the Denver Commission on Cultural Affairs are seeking nominations for the 2006 Mayor’s Awards for Excellence in the Arts. The Mayor will present the awards at a community reception in early 2007.

This annual tradition of recognizing individuals and organizations that have made significant and lasting contributions to the arts in the City and County of Denver was begun by Mayor Federico Peña in 1986 and continued by Mayor Wellington E. Webb.

Previous recipients include Ron Henderson, Maruca and Daniel Salazar, Shadow Theatre Company, Ellie and George Caulkins, Dianne Reeves, Gully Stanford, Lamont School of Music, Marin Alsop, Denver Taiko, Tina Poe, René Heredia and PHAMALy, among others.

Nominations may be for:

  • Individual artists, other individuals or collaboratives
  • Educators and educational institutions
  • Service and/or support to the arts
  • Arts organizations
  • Self-nominations are welcomed.

All nominations are reviewed by a panel of Commissioners and previous recipients of the Mayor’s Award. The panel submits candidates to the Mayor for confirmation

Non-Profits Can Raise Cash as Poll Workers
In an innovative effort to meet the need for Election Day poll workers, nonprofit organizations can organize their volunteers to work the polls and donate their fees as a fund-raiser for the organization.
Greening Up Greater Park Hill
You can volunteer to help plant 500 trees along streets in the Greater Park Hill neighborhood the week of October 20 - 25.  It's a joint effort of Tree by Tree- the Million Tree Inititative and the Park People to add to the urban canopy.
Energy Assistance Applications Accepted
Applications are now being accepted for the Low-income Energy Assistance Program (LEAP). The maximum benefit has been increased for the upcoming season to help families pay their energy bills this upcoming winter.

Mayor Hickenlooper has unveiled the 2008 One Book, One Denver selection. Dashiell Hammett’s Classic "The Thin Man" will be at the center of community-wide activities and events through October.
