REC-CREATIVE SPACE DIRECTORY GUIDES ARTISTS TO NEIGHBORHOODS Monday, September 08, 2008 | 42 ° Light Rain

Online Directory Utilizes Rec Centers

The Denver Office of Cultural Affairs (DOCA) and Denver Parks & Recreation (DPR) announce Rec-Creative Space, an online directory that identifies affordable, neighborhood-based space for creative activity in Denver’s 29 recreation centers. The downloadable directory can be found at www.denvergov.org/CreateDenver or www.denvergov.org/Recreation.

The purpose of the Rec-Creative Space directory is to help artists and arts administrators more easily locate suitable and affordable space in Denver recreation centers. The directory provides information about available space in each Denver recreation center that may be suitable for dance and visual arts classes, rehearsals, meetings and performances.

Rec-Creative Space is an outcome of the Mayor’s Task Force on Creative Spaces and the subsequent report, Space Matters. “One of the goals of the Mayor’s Task Force on Creative Spaces was to identify pathways that better utilize and maximize City-owned assets for creative uses,” said Ginger White, Senior Economic Development Specialist, DOCA. “The Rec-Creative Space directory is one tool for making such creative space opportunities transparent to the public.”

“Denver Parks & Recreation is honored to partner with the Denver Office of Cultural Affairs on the Creative Spaces initiative” said Daniel Betts, deputy director, DPR. “We’re pleased to showcase suitable and affordable space in Denver’s 29 area recreation centers for creative use.”

The directory includes one-page summary sheets that describe space that may be available for creative activity for each recreation center in the DPR system. Each sheet also includes the name of the center, its address, a phone number for the Recreation Center Supervisor and a link to its homepage. Space has not been set aside only for creative use; spaces must be reserved and permitted through normal DPR Facility Permitting.

Rec-Creative Space is a project of the Denver Office of Cultural Affairs’ Create Denver initiative in collaboration with Denver Parks & Recreation.

The mission of Create Denver is to support, promote and grow the commercial arts sector. Create Denver includes policy recommendations, programmatic initiatives, technical assistance and advocacy.
