Evil Companions Literary Award, Honoring poet Jorie Graham
The Oxford Hotel
1637 Wazee St., Denver, CO
The Evil Companions Literary Award is presented annually to a poet or writer who embodies the spirit of the West. The award pays homage to a group of Denver writers who met in the 1950s and 60s to drink and discuss writing, and dubbed themselves the Evil Companions.

Jorie Graham 2008
Jorie Graham will be the 2008 recipient of the Evil Companions Literary Award. Widely regarded as one of the leading voices in American poetry today, Graham has published six books of original poems over the past 20 years and edited several anthologies. Her volume of selected poems, titled The Dream of the Unified Field, won the Pulitzer Prize in 1996. "Each poem," she writes in the introduction to The Best American Poetry 1990, "is an act of the mind that tries - via precision of seeing, feeling, and thinking - to clean the language of its current lies, to make it capable of connecting us to the world."
