GLOBAL “GIS DAY” DAY CELEBRATION COMES TO DENVER
Geographic Information Systems Displays to Showcase the Role of Mapping Technology
in Denver’s Local Government

Many City and County of Denver agencies use Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology for data analysis and map creation, aiding in the provision of local services and planning for large events. These groups will unite on GIS Day – Wednesday, November 19, 2008, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon in the first floor atrium of the Webb Municipal Office Building, 201 W. Colfax Ave. – for an exhibit on the innovative ways in which GIS technology is utilized by Denver’s municipal government.  Staff will be on site that morning to present their maps and answer questions.

GIS Day attendees can enter a raffle for GIS merchandise and enjoy refreshments. Free copies of the Hike and Bike Guide created by Denver’s GIS group and distributed during the Democratic National Convention will also be available.

In conjunction with the worldwide celebration of Geography Awareness Week, maps will be on display all week (November 17-21) in the Webb Building atrium, including maps created to analyze crime data, plow streets, study water quality and prepare to host the August 2008 Democratic National Convention.
Geographic Information Systems utilize computers to analyze data and map location-based information. GIS Day is a global event that celebrates and promotes GIS technology’s real-world applications that are making a difference in society.

For additional information on the role of GIS technology in the City and County of Denver, please contact Becca Reidy or visit www.denvergov.org/maps.
