About a year from now Denver will have a new justice center that will feature a new detention facility for jail inmates. Bill Lovingier, the Director of Corrections and Denver’s Under-sheriff joins Denver DA Mitch Morrissey to talk about the changes ahead.

The Denver Sheriff Department has about 900 employees; most of them (789) are uniformed personnel

In 2008, there were 46,989 people booked into the Denver County Jail’s two facilities

The average daily jail population in Denver’s County Jail is about 2000 (it was designed for 1,634)

More than 3-million meals were prepared by jail kitchen trustees and served to jail inmates in 2008

The new detention facility will have 1,472 housing unit beds and 28 medical beds

The new detention facility will use 11 elevators (there are no elevators at the County Jail on Smith Road and there are two at the pre-arraignment facility downtown)

The new detention center will be 488,000 square feet and will have the equivalent of about 800 miles of wiring
-
761,000 pounds of sheet metal has been used in the construction of the new building
