Interpreter's Office FAQ

What are the responsibilities of an interpreter?
In court, interpreters must faithfully and precisely interpret everything that is being said by a judge, prosecutor, defendant, counsel, or witness. They do not give legal advice, advocate for anyone, or offer opinions. They cannot change the language or explain things that were unclear. Interpreters abide by a strict Code of Ethics.

Who are the court interpreters?
The court has two full-time spanish interpreters. Spanish Interpreters have completed and passed a certification exam. The court also contracts with interpreters-Spanish and other languages. The Spanish language interpreters have been certified by the court.

How do I get an Interpreter?
When you appear in court, you will need to request an interpreter. If you need an interpreter in the spanish langauge, an interpreter will be available shortly. If you need an interpreter in another langauge, your case may have to be continued.

For all Civil cases, with the exception of courtroom 303W, you will need to provide your own interpreter.

To work as a Spanish language interpreter in Denver County Court you must be certified. You can get the necessary information on certification at the following website: www.courtinterpreters.org.
