Denver County Court Probation handles misdemeanor (M) and city ordinance violations (GS) cases. In 2009, this department supervised 3719 drinking/drugging and driving cases; 922 domestic violence cases and 179 family violence cases and 541 cases including but not limited to: child abuse, weapons, thefts, assaults, sex offenses, prostitution, shoplifting and wrongs to minors. Juvenile cases totaled 317 for 2009.

The majority of cases referred to DCC Probation by the court are DUI/DWAI/DUID cases-drinking/drugging and driving offenses. Persons convicted of these offenses are evaluated by Probation Officers certified by the State of Colorado Division of Behavior Health to evaluate and supervise this type of offender and to provide recommendations to the court regarding their need to undergo Education and/or Therapy sessions. Probation Officers handling these cases maintain ongoing relationships with treatment agencies in order to hold defendants responsible to court orders and to increase public safety.

Domestic violence (DV) offenses are defined as an act or threatened act of violence upon a person with whom the actor is or has been intimately involved.  Domestic violence offenses typically involve attempts to control, punish, intimidate or extract revenge and can involve volatile behaviors. Family violence encompasses child abuse, some wrongs to minors offenses, and interpersonal violence amongst family members. Probation Officers assess risk, make treatment referrals and supervisor offenders on their caseloads while partnering with treatment agencies to manage these offenders.

Sex offenses, weapons, pawn violations, thefts, assaults prostitution, false information and shoplifting are examples of other case types supervised by this department. Probation Officers supervising sex offenders undergo additional training to be qualified to monitor this type of offender and function as a team member in conjunction with treatment agencies.

DCC Probation also has 2 Probation Officers who handle Juvenile city ordinance violators and typically handle caseloads of 80-100 offenders a piece. These Officers are familiar with Juvenile treatment providers and work closely with agencies to procure the best treatment options for youthful offenders.

The Warm Welcome Center is across the street at 270 14th Street (at 14th & Court Streets) and offers free child care for persons involved with court business. Children are not allowed in appointments with persons meeting with Probation Officers and may not be left unattended in the waiting room.
