About the show
Council Matters provides the citizens of Denver insight into the Denver City Council, and its members, functions and responsibilities.
  The show’s goal is to educate the public on upcoming policy and neighborhood topics; inform citizens about projects of city-wide importance, and present varying opinions on current, salient issues.
  Additionally, the show highlights intriguing locations, developments and events occurring in our city’s diverse neighborhoods and Council districts.

How does City Council identify their budget priorities?
 
In addition to its legislative functions, Denver City Council has the sometimes daunting task of budgeting the City’s money.  This continues to be a pivotal time for all of Denver.  In tough economic times, some advocate continued disciplined spending and prudent financial management.  How then does City Council identify and focus on fiscal strategies in the upcoming budget cycle that best serve Denver’s diverse citizenry and maintain the special quality of life that’s one of the big reasons we all live here.


 
 
 
 
How does City Council spend the City’s money?
 
Council has legislative power to change regulations in the Charter regarding spending procedures in the City Charter as well as approval authority for contracts over and above $500,000.  How does the Council work with the Mayor’s office on budget priorities and approvals.  Newly elected Council President Jeanne Robb and President Pro Tem Rick Garcia review the 2008 0 2009 budget priorities and what has been and what remains to be accomplished in the last third of this year.


 
 
 
 
2008 – 2009 Council Budget Priorities?
 
Council has identified six key areas for spending focus for 2008 - 2009.  These include:
- Graffiti removal and prevention
- Neighborhood maintenance and enhancement
- Economic development
- Bike, pedestrian and transit connectivity
- Attracting and retaining families and children
 
City Council will hold Budget Briefings with the Mayor in Mid-September.
