Steps to Apply for a Contractor License

 

STEPS IN APPLYING FOR A CONTRACTOR LICENSE

 
(You must have a Supervisor Certificate prior to applying – see #4 on this list)

 

 1.  Applications are to be printed in ink or typewritten and completed in every detail.

NOTE:  Electrical License applicants only may omit section #7 on the License Application.

Right-Of-Way and Sewer Contractor license applicants please use the “ROW License application” and steps to apply.

 2.    Applications must be signed by a corporate officer, partner, member of the LLC, or sole proprietor.     Original signatures are required; no faxed or photocopied signatures will be accepted.

 3.      Applications must be filed in person at Contractor Licensing, 201 W. Colfax Ave., Dept. 205, Denver, CO 80202.  (Second Floor, Wellington E. Webb Building).

 4.      All Licenses (except Electrical) require a current Supervisor Certificate Holder to be associated with it at all times (see #7 on the application).  A “Supervisor Certificate holder” is a qualified individual who has been issued a Supervisor Certificate by this office.  For Plumbing Licenses, the Supervisor Certificate Holder is the Master Plumber, and a current State of Colorado Master Plumber Card is required to be associated with the license it at all times

 5a.    The Supervisor Certificate Holder, as listed in # 7 on the License application, must appear in person at this office to sign an Affidavit of Supervisor Responsibility, submit a clearly legible copy of their driver’s license or state issued photo-ID card (preferably enlarged), and provide us with a local address.

 5b.    If the Supervisor Certificate Holder is not a corporate officer, partner, member of the LLC, or the sole proprietor, he must submit a letter on company letterhead, signed by a corporate officer, partner, member of the LLC, or the sole proprietor stating that he or she will be the “Supervisor of Record” for the company for the type of license being applied for. 

 6.      Any Corporate officer or Member of an LLC signing and submitting documentation for licensing must be listed on previous filings with the Secretary of State or must provide notarized Minutes of a Meeting or other notarized list of current Officers or Members.

7.       It is a mandatory requirement that all License applicants read Chapter 1 of the Denver Building Code.  This is available to read and download at our website:  www.denvergov.org/Building Code or you can purchase a copy at our 2nd floor Cashier.

8.       It is mandatory for each license applicant to submit a clearly legible copy of their driver’s license or state issued photo-ID card (preferably enlarged) with their application. 
 
9.       Sole Proprietors using a Trade Name or applicants applying for a license as an Individual must submit an Affidavit of Lawful Presence and a form of secure and verifiable identification.  Applicants submitting their application in person with original secure and verifiable identification, who sign the affidavit Of Legal Presence in-person do not need to supply notarized copies.  Any application delivered by a third person must include a Notarized copy of the applicant’s Affidavit of Lawful Presence and a notarized copy of the applicant’s secure and verifiable identification.  (This requirement does not pertain to Corporations, Partnerships, or LLC’s.)
 

10.      Electrical Contractors must present a current State of Colorado Electrical Contractor card with their application.  There is no licensing fee for Electrical Contractors.  The company name listed on the State Electrical Contractor card must match exactly the company name as filed with the Secretary of State (see # 6 above for additional documents requirements). 

11.      Plumbing Contractors must supply a current State of Colorado Master Plumber card with their application. 

12.      Fire Protection A & B Contractors must supply a current State of Colorado Fire Suppression registration with their application.

13.      An $80.00 Fee is required at the time of application.  Checks or money orders should be made payable to “Manager of Finance”.  Electrical Licenses are exempt from these fees.

14.      A License ID card will be issued only to a corporate officer, partner, member of the LLC, or sole proprietor as listed on submitted documentation.  Duplicate ID cards are $5.00 each.  To authorize another individual to pick up a License and ID Card, submit a currently dated letter of authorization signed by a Corporate officer, Partner, member of the LLC, or the sole proprietor stating that the individual listed is authorized to pick up the “License and ID Card” for the company listed. 

15.      Denial of a license may be appealed to the Board of Appeals in the manner provided by Chapter 1 of the Denver Building Code Amendments.
