CIVIC CENTER PROJECT PLANNING: PHASE I
Civic Center represents Denver’s rich history of civic pride in its public open spaces that showcase beautiful monuments and structures surrounded by plazas, lawns and gardens. Created over 100 years ago as the city’s primary gathering space, Civic Center is one of the State’s most symbolic places. Denver Parks and Recreation, with the support of its non-profit partner the Civic Center Conservancy and the community, is committed to revitalizing the park while also protecting the park’s significant historic values as a vibrant cultural center. Based on the Civic Center Park Master Plan, three primary strategies for park revitalization include preservation, activation, and enhancement is underway.
Preservation: All historic structures and elements will be preserved and integrated into the park.
Activation: The Civic Center Conservancy is working to encourage activity, energy and interest in the park by hosting a summer farmer’s market, film series and concert series this summer.
Enhancements: New features including plazas, water features, gardens, outdoor exhibit spaces, connections, food kiosks and other enhancements will be conceived as a 21st century overlay that honors and protects the historic features of the park. To generate public discourse about the future of the park, the Civic Center Conservancy sponsored world renowned architect, Daniel Libeskind to develop conceptual ideas for the park.
