Denver’s Geographic Information Systems Department (DenverGIS) Receives Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI) awards
(Denver)…The City & County of Denver’s Geographic Information Systems department (DenverGIS) is the proud recipient of two first-place awards for the Denver Bike Map, at the 2004 Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI) International User Conference held in San Diego California! Denver’s bike map was one of over 1,000 international entries submitted, which included several from National Geographic.
The full-color bike map, produced by Doug Genzer of DenverGIS, in cooperation with Julie Connor from the graphics department in Community Planning and Development, provides comprehensive information for bicyclists. The map is user-friendly and easy to read, and clearly defines the location of current bike routes, bike lanes, bike shops, places of interest, and planned improvements to Denver’s bike infrastructure. Additional graphics and text were incorporated to facilitate awareness of the rules of the road, bike safety, and bike etiquette. This map demonstrates the City’s continued commitment to provide safe alternative forms of transportation in its service to the public.
The Bike Map won both First Place in the Best Single Map Product – Large Format category and First Place Overall! These recognitions are comparable to the “Academy Awards” for cartography and feature the application of the ESRI software using geographic computer technology.
Complete results for all categories in the map gallery competition can be found at the : ESRI website. The map will be published in the bound ESRI Map Book, and is also available from DenverGIS.
Denver has been recognized three years in a row by Bicycling Magazine as a “Top Ten City for Cycling.” We are also the largest city to qualify for the League of American Bicyclists “Bicycle Friendly Communities” program. To preview a copy of our map visit the Denver Bike Map webpage.
