Total Crime

    • Total crime increased from 45,317 in 2001 to 47,415 in 2002 – an increase of 4.6% or 2,098 reported crimes.
    • Part 1 Crimes (Person and Property Crime) increased a total of 1,722 offenses, from 30,133 reported in 2001 to 31,855 in 2002 – a 5.7% increase.
    • Part 2 Crimes (All Other Offenses) increased a total of 376 offenses, from 15,184 reported in 2001 to 15,560 in 2002 – a 2.5% increase.
    • Out of 78 neighborhoods, 25 neighborhoods had a decrease in crime from 2001 to 2002 and 53 had an increase.

Part 1 Crimes Against Persons

    • Part 1 Crimes Against Persons (homicide, sexual assault, robbery and aggravated assault) increased 2.5% or a total of 73 reported offenses.
      • Sexual Assaults had the largest percent increase with 8.9% or a total of 28 crimes.
      • The greatest numeric increase was in aggravated assaults. There were 1,376 reported in 2001 compared to 1,477 in 2002, which represents a 7.3% increase or 101 more aggravated assaults.
      • There was a decrease of 60 robberies for a total percent change of -5.0% from 2001 to 2002.
    • Out of 78 statistical neighborhoods, 40 neighborhoods decreased in crimes against persons and 36 increased. There was no change in 2 neighborhoods.

Part 1 Crimes Against Property

    • Part 1 Property Crimes (burglary, larceny, auto theft and arson) increased 6.1%, from 27,185 in 2001 to 28,834 in 2002.
      • Burglary had the greatest percent increase with 9.0% or a total of 501 crimes.
      • Larceny had the greatest numeric change with 709 reported offenses for a total change of 4.9% from 2001 to 2002.
      • Arsons decreased from 344 reported in 2001 to 275 reported in 2002. This represents a decrease of 69 crimes or -20.1%.
    • Out of 78 statistical neighborhoods, 23 decreased from 2001 to 2002, 54 increased and 1 remained the same.

    • Summary of Neighborhoods with a decrease:
      • Denver International Airport’s greatest decrease was in Larceny (-62). The only increases were in Arson (+2) and All Other (+1).
      • Sloan Lake decreased or had no change in every crime category except Sexual Assault (+1) and All Other (+12). The greatest decreases were in Larceny (-54) and Burglary (-20).
      • City Park West had a decrease or no change in every crime category.
      • Sun Valley had 27 fewer Auto Thefts and 25 fewer All Other crimes. The largest increase was in Aggravated Assaults – 15 more reported in 2002 compared to 2001.
      • Skyland’s greatest decreases were in Burglary (-14) and Larceny (-10). There were 4 more Auto Thefts reported in 2002 than in 2001.
    • Summary of neighborhoods with an increase:
      • North Park Hill had 53 more Burglaries, 48 more Larcenies and 42 more All Other offenses. There were 4 less reported Aggravated Assaults and 1 less Robbery.
      • Kennedy’s largest increases were in Larceny (+24) and Burglary (+20). The largest decrease was in Robbery (-6).
      • There was an increase of 20 All Other offenses and 17 Larcenies in Southmoor Park. There were slight decreases in the number of Aggravated Assaults (-3), Sexual Assaults (-2) and Arson (-2).
      • The greatest increase in Wellshire occurred in Larceny (+17) and the greatest decrease was in Burglary (-2).
      • There was an increase of 56 Larcenies and 32 All Other offenses reported in the University statistical neighborhood. There were 4 fewer reported Aggravated Assaults and 1 less Arson.

Speer had 8 more Sexual Assaults in 2002 compared to 2001 and Montclair had 1 more Aggravated Assault.
    • Summary of neighborhoods with increases:
    • Robberies and Aggravated Assaults accounted for most of the increases in the five neighborhoods with the largest percent increase in Crimes Against Persons.
